Hi! My name is Laura Peters, and I am a pre-licensed therapist with CARE. I currently am telehealth only, but do consider Maple Grove my home location. I hope to be fully licensed within 2024 and am looking forward to being able to continue building my brand as a therapist here in the twin cities. I am a queer identifying provider and am not afraid to think outside of the box when it comes to the work we do in therapy. I do not believe therapy is (or can be) a one-size fits all experience, and it is my goal to meet you where you are at to help you accomplish your goals as you navigate through your mental health journey. I will leave you with this line from one of my favorite songs “If you’re facing down a dark hall, I’ll grab my light and go with you.” No one should have to navigate their darkness alone and I am here to provide support however I can.
While my “favorite” age group to work with is 15-24, I work with clients of all ages and backgrounds. I very much value the entire spectrum of the human experience and I like my work to reflect a true representation of that. While I am working as a telehealth clinician, I am not currently accepting clients under the age of 11 years old at this time. I especially like working with clients who identify as LGBTQIA+, families or individuals who have been impacted by adoption/foster-care system, polyamorous/ethically non-monogamous relationships, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and grief & loss.
While I am trained in more traditional models of treatment like CBT, I tend to gravitate towards client centered, solution focused, and humanistic approaches. I also like to incorporate an eclectic blend of experiences into my therapy sessions such as guided meditation, mindfulness exercises, art therapy techniques and play therapy techniques. I have also received training for PCIT services and various “nerd therapy” methods. I also operate under a trauma informed lense.
I have been working in the mental health field for over 5 years now. I started my journey in mental health working at an inpatient mental health facility for children and teens in Oklahoma for approximately one year. After that, I transitioned to a school-based position for a community nonprofit where I worked out of elementary, middle, and high school locations for another 2.5 years. Since moving to Minnesota, I have worked in community-based therapy programs, Intensive Treatment in Foster Care Programs, and clinic-based outpatient services.
When I am not providing therapy services, I also work as an adjunct professor of psychology. In the times where I am free to spend my time leisurely, I enjoy exploring new places with my children, attending concerts and comic cons, table-top gaming, and doing anything and everything I can outside. One of my current favorite activities is chasing the northern lights. I firmly believe in the healing power of the outside world and will take any and every opportunity I have to explore it!
