During our sessions, I will work with you to make a space where it feels safe to explore your emotions, behaviors, thoughts, and experiences. Like turning over stones on the ground, this process can sometimes feel disruptive, overwhelming, or messy. But it’s only by turning over these stones that can we see what lies beneath them. Patterns in our behaviors, emotional responses, and relationships can begin to emerge. We will work to understand the sources and functions of these patterns and, through this work, you can begin to release patterns that are no longer of service to you. Whatever is leading you to look for a therapist– a life transition, loss, a diagnosis, a general sense of unhappiness, or something else– this process can give way to deeper satisfaction, peace, and self-understanding.
I draw from a relational and psychodynamic approach, which means that I view important early relationships and attachments as uniquely powerful forces in shaping our lasting patterns and emotions. Through this perspective, I believe that a strong and supportive therapeutic relationship is the most powerful tool in therapy. While I may occasionally incorporate skills-based techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you to find some immediate relief in your daily life, I see these techniques as supportive tools while we work to address issues at their root. I believe the struggles that bring you to therapy don’t come from a lack of skills or a failure to manage your emotions, I believe these struggles generally come from a deeper place of pain, confusion, or stagnation. We will focus on tending to that deeper place.
