Knowing what to look for in a couple’s therapist can be daunting. Luckily, CARE Counseling has simplified the process for you! Having in a foundation in relational and emotional counseling, ethics, best practices, and excellent training and supervision ensures that you have the best chance possible for a successful therapy experience.
Training and Experience
For maximum effectiveness, it is recommended to find a therapist who is licensed (or under supervision) with specific training and supervised practice working with couples.
All CARE therapists are either fully licensed or under supervision by a fully licensed provider and receive monthly onsite trainings, including topics of related to sexuality, gender, diversity, and relationships.
Inclusive to Terms that Describe Relationships
Intimate relationships come in various types-of-relationships. It is important to find a couple’s therapist that you can feel comfortable talking about topics inclusive to your relationship dynamic. Examples may include but are not limited to sex positive, marriage therapist, sex therapist, LGBTQ affirming, sex-worker friendly, poly professional, non-monogamy therapist, and kink/ BDSM aware.
CARE therapists understand the continuums of gender identify, gender expression, sexual orientation, and affectional/ sexual expressions. We understand that labels that are used to describe self and the relationship can vary and do not need to remain constant.
Tailored Approaches for Couples
Since individual therapy differs from couples therapy, so do the therapeutic approaches. Reading therapist bios, having a brief consult with the therapist or scheduling specialist to determine good fit, and asking friends or family for recommendations can be helpful.
A few of the approaches that therapists at CARE Counseling utilize include but are not limited to Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) and The Gottman Method Couples Therapy.
