National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI originally started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has now turned into the nation’s leading voice on mental health. They are in an association with more than 500 local affiliates who work in communities to raise awareness and provide support and education to those in need.

What NAMI does
Being a non-profit NAMI relies on gifts and contributions to support their important work. Some important work that they do includes education. NAMI offers education programs to individuals, families, and educators to thousands of communities across the United States to provide everyone with the support and information that they need. NAMI helps to shape national public policy by advocating for people with mental illness. NAMI also offers a toll-free HelpLine which allows them to respond to thousands of requests each year providing free information and support. NAMI also is involved in many public awareness events and activities throughout the year including Mental Illness Awareness Week and NAMIWalks. Each event works to successfully fight stigma and encourage understanding.
