Anger Management

What is Anger Management?

Anger management is a technique to recognize the signs of anger and to take action to deal with the situation in a calm manner.

How do I know I need help with my anger?

  • You regularly feel that you have to hold in your anger
  • You focus on negative experiences
  • You feel constantly irritated and impatient
  • You have frequent arguments with others that cause you frustration
  • You have been physically violent with your partner, children, or others
  • You have made threats of violence against other people or their property
  • You often break things or drive recklessly
  • You avoid situations due to anxiety about potential outbursts of anger

Can counseling help me with my anger?

Counseling can help you:

  • Manage ways to decrease your anger, like improving your sleep and decreasing your stress levels
  • Identify situations that might trigger an anger response and help you respond in non aggressive ways
  • Identify when you are thinking irrationally and help correct it
  • Calm yourself down when you feel yourself getting angry
  • Express your feelings in a healthier manner
  • Focus on problem solving when you feel frustrated
  • Communicate effectively with others to resolve conflicts without aggression

What are the effects of anger?

Anger can have serious consequences when it is not controlled. Your physical health may be affected by the high levels of stress that make you more vulnerable to diabetes, a weaker immune system, heart disease, insomnia, and high blood pressure. Your mental health could suffer as well by making it difficult for you to concentrate, or your anger leading to more stress, depression, or other mental problems. Your career and relationships could be negatively impacted by your anger by making it hard for others to trust you, speak honestly to you, or feel comfortable around you.
